18 dental school updates

From new residency programs to leadership appointments and funding updates, here are 18 dental school updates Becker's has covered since Jan. 12: 

1. The University of Mississippi Medical Center School of Dentistry is piloting an after-hours dental clinic to increase accessibility for patients. 

2. Batesville, Ark.-based Lyon College received $15 million in federal funding to help open its planned dental school.

3. Boca Raton-based Florida Atlantic University may no longer be opening a dental school after having two sources of funding fall through.

4. New York City-based Yeshiva University has started the process of opening a dental school.

5. The University of Illinois Chicago appointed Susan Rowan, DDS, as dean of its dental school. 

6. The Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine created an oral and maxillofacial radiology department. 

7. The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center closed its Montefiore dental center and transitioned care to the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine.

8. Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond identified the location for its potential new dentistry center.

9. The state of Wisconsin released $5 million in funding to Milwaukee-based Marquette University School of Dentistry, which the school will use to create a dental general practice residency program.

10. Statesboro-based Georgia Southern University was granted state funding to build a dental school.

11. The University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry opened a satellite dental clinic to improve dental health in rural Alabama.

12. Forty-nine dental schools received a total of more than $276 million from the National Institutes of Health in 2023. 

13. The University of Minnesota School of Dentistry's special needs healthcare clinic received a $100,000 grant to improve patient care and accessibility.

14. The Oklahoma City Police Department confirmed in February they were given a false alarm of a possible active shooter at the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry in Oklahoma City.

15. Dr. Gerry Bradley, dean of the University of Louisville (Ky.) School of Dentistry, was appointed executive vice president and provost of the university. 

16. The UT Health San Antonio School of Dentistry opened a 4,300-square-foot special-care dental clinic.

17. The Dental College of Georgia at Augusta University is launching a program to offer tuition assistance to students who commit to practicing in underserved areas.

18. East Carolina University's School of Dental Medicine in Greenville, N.C., celebrated serving 100,000 patients throughout the state.
